Digital Desk: A heartbreaking incident from Rangia, Kamrup Rural, has shaken the area, , raising serious concerns about social sensitivity and public humiliation. An 11-year-old Class VI student, Fatima Begum, allegedly ended her life, after being publicly humiliated over a Rs 5 cake. The incident occurred in Ward No. 9 of Gogmalacha, Rangia, during the festive period of Eid.
As per reports, Fatima had taken a Rs 5 cake from a local shop without paying. The shop owner, Murshida Begum, reportedly became furious and allegedly tied the young girl by the roadside, verbally abusing and humiliating her in public.
Although a local man later intervened and freed the child from the situation, the emotional trauma proved devastating. Fatima returned home and, taking advantage of being alone, ended her life.
Fatima, a bright student of Rangia Higher Secondary School, was considered highly promising by her teachers, who expected her to secure top ranks in her annual examinations.
Her father is no more, and her mother works as a domestic help in others’ homes. The tragic incident has left the entire locality in grief and outrage.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, Assam Police have arrested Murshida Begum and her husband, Manik Ali. An investigation is currently underway.
The incident has deeply shaken Rangia, sparking widespread concern over the consequences of public shaming and societal insensitivity.
