Thousands of tea garden workers employed by Andrew Yule & Company Ltd, a public sector enterprise operating under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, are gearing up for renewed democratic protests across Assam. Approximately 35,000 direct and indirect labourers are affected by the company's alleged failure to fulfil its commitments regarding legally entitled wages, benefits, and service-related dues.
Reports from Dibrugarh indicate that despite numerous rounds of discussions, previous protests, and formal agreements spanning the last four years, the state-owned entity has reportedly fallen short on implementing its promises within stipulated timelines. This prolonged delay has left a significant workforce deprived of their rightful entitlements, according to worker representatives.
The outstanding issues are comprehensive, encompassing basic wages, bonuses, access to medical facilities, arrears, and other statutory benefits, alongside concerns related to transfers and promotions. This ongoing situation has prompted frustration among the workforce, leading to the decision to escalate their demands through further action.
In response to the protracted non-compliance, an emergency representative meeting was convened on Wednesday at the Naharkatia branch union office of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS). The gathering saw the participation of presidents, secretaries, office-bearers, and worker representatives from various Andrew Yule tea estates, including those under the Golaghat, Titabar, Naharkatia, and Moran branch unions, highlighting the widespread nature of the grievance across Assam's tea belt. The meeting aimed to strategize the next steps in their campaign to secure overdue payments and benefits.
