In a heartening display of community resilience, a volunteer group from Jorhat has been instrumental in restoring dozens of flood-damaged homes across Upper Assam. Led by local social worker and entrepreneur Kamaleswor Kutum, a dedicated team of approximately 120 young individuals has provided crucial, free cleanup and restoration services, bringing relief to an estimated 80 families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts.
The initiative began on July 24, just days after the devastating floods of July 19 left a trail of destruction, coating homes with thick layers of silt and mud. This heavy sedimentation poses a significant and arduous cleanup challenge for affected households. Kutum, an entrepreneur with interests in piggery, fishery, duck farming, and local green conservation efforts, explained that he felt a profound moral duty for those untouched by the disaster to step forward and aid fellow citizens whose lives had been shattered.
Responding to a surge of requests, particularly from Sivasagar and Charaideo, Kutum has been coordinating daily volunteer deployments. The teams, which notably include over 50 girls, are transported on a rotational basis in his two personal vehicles. He also ensures they are equipped with various tools and materials, personally bearing all the operational costs. This grassroots effort provides vital practical assistance, complementing the broader relief distribution efforts underway in the flood-ravaged regions, and highlighting the power of local solidarity in times of crisis.
