Digital Desk: The Assam State Cabinet, led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, has recommended the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the Disturbed Areas Act from the entire state of Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the Cabinet's unanimous decision during a briefing at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Khanapara, Guwahati to send a formal appeal to the Central Government for the withdrawal of AFSPA, a law that has been in effect for many years.
The State Cabinet also proposed that the Disturbed Areas Act be removed statewide in addition to the withdrawal of the AFSPA.
The Cabinet also declared that various prominent colleges in the state will be given university status. The application for this coveted upgrade has been approved for Sibsagar College, Kokrajhar Government College, Bongaigaon College, JB College-Jorhat, North Lakhimpur College, Nagaon College, and Gurucharan College.
It was also decided at the cabinet meeting that Biswanath, in the Tamulpur district, will become an official district starting on September 17.
To address the ongoing problem in the state's power sector, the Assam Cabinet also decided that the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) would speak with Union Minister HBS on September 9.
