Guwahati, July 31: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Friday that formal discussions with neighbouring Nagaland regarding the contributing factors to the recent devastating floods in Upper Assam would be deferred until relief and rehabilitation operations are fully concluded. Speaking to the press following a Cabinet meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur, the Chief Minister underscored the state government's immediate focus on assisting affected populations.
Sarma explained that it would be inappropriate to delve into the causes or accountability of the floods at a time when Nagaland itself is grappling with the aftermath of the natural calamity. He highlighted the shared suffering, stating that any dialogue on the matter would be more constructive once both states have addressed immediate humanitarian needs. "Perhaps by September or October, we can meet the Nagaland Chief Minister and discuss the matter," he said, indicating a potential timeline for these crucial talks.
The Chief Minister further noted that while academicians and experts are already engaged in examining the various causes behind the widespread inundation, the government's current priority remains the provision of immediate relief. He expressed confidence that by the time discussions with Nagaland take place, comprehensive data, including satellite imagery and scientific assessments, would be available. This information, he added, would provide a much clearer picture of what transpired, its future implications, and potential long-term solutions to mitigate similar disasters.
