In a devastating incident that unfolded in Assam's Cachar district on Thursday, four individuals lost their lives inside an underground water tank while undertaking a routine cleaning operation at a newly constructed residence. The tragedy, which occurred in Kumarpara, Machimpur, under the Barkhola Assembly constituency, saw a valiant but ultimately fatal attempt by three men to rescue a colleague.
According to initial reports, the first worker descended into the confined space of the water tank to begin cleaning. Shortly after, he reportedly collapsed, with preliminary assessments suggesting the inhalation of toxic gas or severe oxygen deficiency as the probable cause. Concerned by his prolonged absence, three other individuals, one after another, entered the tank in an attempt to provide assistance.
Tragically, each of the rescuers also succumbed to the hazardous conditions within the tank, losing consciousness and ultimately their lives. The sequential nature of the incident highlights the extreme dangers posed by enclosed spaces, particularly when unknown atmospheric conditions are present.
