Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today (December 9) announced the name of the recently born giraffe at the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden. After receiving an overwhelming 350 suggestions from the public, the giraffe calf has been officially named 'Parijat' through a lucky draw.

CM Sarma highlighted the challenges faced in raising the infant giraffe, as it was rejected by its mother shortly after birth. Despite this hurdle, the collaborative efforts of a wildlife specialist from Mumbai and the dedicated zoo authorities ensured the well-being of the giraffe calf.

The male giraffe, born last November, became a cause for celebration in Assam. Chief Minister Sarma took to the 'X' platform to share the joyous news, inviting suggestions for the newborn's name. The response was tremendous, reflecting the enthusiasm of the public for the zoo's newest addition.

The Assam State Zoo is currently home to four giraffes, including 'Vijay,' a male giraffe brought to the zoo in 2019, and 'Vijaya,' a female giraffe introduced in 2022. 'Parijat' joins this growing giraffe family, bringing smiles to both zoo officials and the people of Assam.
