Digital Desk: The Assam government sanctioned Rs. 259 crores on Friday to build libraries across the state for inculcating reading habits among the students.

During the weekly cabinet meeting, the amount mentioned above was approved to be sanctioned.

The "Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2023-24" would establish digital infrastructure and children's and adolescent libraries, stated cabinet.

For an estimated cost of Rs 259.70 crore, the project intends to start constructing new libraries and procurement of computers, books, and furniture with internet connectivity for 2,197 village panchayats and 400 municipal wards.

This will ensure that children and adolescents can get to the latest books and are linked to the National Digital Resources.

The traditional Moh-juj celebration that is held during Magh Bihu has also been approved by the cabinet, although it will now need to be organized under Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

The issue of a specific procedure/SOP permitting traditional buffalo and bullfights to be held at Magh Bihu in Ahatguri, Morigaon district, Nagaon district, or in any other region of Assam received "In-principle approval" from the government.

As an essential component of the centuries-old Assamese cultural heritage, the SOP will make sure that no intentional pain or cruelty is inflicted upon the animals and that the organizers take care of their well-being during the yearly Moh-juj festival.

The Directorate of Char Areas Development was also changed by the government to the "Directorate of Minority Affairs & Char Areas, Assam."

The Directorate of Minority Affairs and Char Areas would carry out a socio-economic assessment of indigenous Assamese Muslims, the cabinet was informed.
