Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday underscored the critical need for students to acquire specialised skills and practical expertise, asserting that traditional undergraduate or postgraduate degrees alone are no longer sufficient in today's competitive job market. Speaking at the launch of application form distribution for the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Scheme and Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Babu Scheme at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, the Chief Minister emphasised that merit and specific skills would be the primary determinants of future career opportunities.
Addressing the gathering, Sarma urged students to maintain academic focus and discipline while actively pursuing additional specialisations. He highlighted that the global economy increasingly values specialists, making it imperative for individuals to develop expertise in a secondary field to significantly boost their employability.
Detailing the state government's commitment to job creation, Sarma revealed plans to recruit approximately two lakh individuals over the next five years. This includes a significant demand for nearly 22,000 professionals in healthcare and technical fields, such as laboratory technicians, GNM nurses, and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs).
Expressing concern over the comparatively low enrolment rates in science education across Assam, the Chief Minister stressed that greater interest and participation in scientific disciplines are fundamental for the state's sustained development and long-term progress.
