  • Recent fact-checks have revealed a surge in misinformation, including an AI-generated video falsely depicting a rescue operation during Assam floods and old footage misattributed to ongoing Jharkhand protests

In a week marked by significant regional events, a wave of misleading content has circulated online, prompting urgent clarification from fact-checking initiatives. Among the most prominent examples is an AI-generated video that purported to show a dramatic rescue operation amidst the devastating floods in Assam. The fabricated footage depicted a helicopter airlifting individuals from a train stranded in submerged areas, creating a convincing but entirely false narrative of the disaster.

This deceptive visual, widely shared across social media platforms, was confirmed to be a product of artificial intelligence and did not represent any authentic events or rescue efforts in the flood-affected regions of Assam. The incident underscores the growing challenge of distinguishing genuine crisis reporting from digitally manufactured content, particularly concerning sensitive situations like natural calamities.

Separately, misinformation also plagued reports surrounding the ongoing protests in Jharkhand, which are primarily focused on alleged irregularities with the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) exams. Videos featuring individuals, including founder Abhijeet Dipke, and drone footage of large crowds were circulated with claims that they depicted current protest scenes or showed support for the demonstrators in Ranchi. However, investigations revealed that these videos were either old or taken out of their original context, falsely suggesting their relevance to the recent demonstrations.

These instances highlight a persistent pattern of digital misinformation, where old or fabricated content is repurposed to spread false narratives during critical times. The prevalence of such misleading visuals necessitates heightened vigilance from the public and a commitment to verifying information before sharing, especially when it pertains to ongoing social and environmental challenges in the region.
