Assam is poised to undertake a significant challenge in providing enhanced rural employment opportunities to its workforce. With the revised scheme aiming to provide 125 days of work, the state's Panchayat and Rural Development department, along with gaon panchayats, will need to substantially step up their implementation efforts.
According to recent statistics, in the financial year 2025-26, a mere 7,228 job cardholder households were able to avail 100 days of work, highlighting the difficulties in achieving the earlier target. This raises significant concerns about the feasibility of meeting the increased target of 125 days under the revamped scheme.
The scale of the task is underscored by the presence of 34.17 lakh active job cards and 48.01 lakh active workers in the state as of June 2026. Furthermore, officials said that 17 development blocks out of 199 were unable to provide any household with 100 days of work, indicating disparities in the implementation across different regions.
As the state moves forward with the enhanced scheme, it will be crucial to address these disparities and significantly enhance the delivery of rural employment opportunities to meet the new targets, ensuring that the benefits reach the intended workforce.
