Guwahati: Assam is set to significantly enhance its spice sector, with the state's Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika holding a crucial meeting with the Spices Board of India to strategize on boosting cultivation, improving quality, and expanding market reach. The discussions, held at Janata Bhawan on Thursday, involved Spices Board Secretary M S Manivannan and officials from its North East India Regional Office.
Minister Hazarika underscored Assam's vast potential for expanding the production of a diverse range of spices, including ginger, turmeric, black pepper, chillies, garlic, coriander, cardamom, and tejpat. He highlighted that the increasing domestic and international demand presents a significant opportunity to elevate farmers' incomes and strengthen the state's agricultural economy.
During the meeting, the minister assured the Spices Board of comprehensive support from the state's Agriculture Department for spice growers. He emphasized the necessity of coordinated efforts between state agencies and the Spices Board to promote cultivation, ensure high-quality produce, enhance productivity, and forge stronger market linkages for local farmers.
Discussions also focused on leveraging Assam's unique agro-climatic conditions, which are ideal for spice cultivation, to establish a more prominent presence in both national and global spice markets. This initiative aims to position Assam as a key player in India's burgeoning spice industry.
