GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam, while showing marginal signs of improvement on Saturday, remains critical, with close to 1.78 lakh people still reeling from its impact across the state. Official reports indicate that seven districts, encompassing 20 revenue circles and 349 villages, continue to bear the brunt of the inundation.
According to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), no new flood-related fatalities were recorded in the past 24 hours. However, the cumulative death toll from floods and associated incidents this season stands at 82, underscoring the severe human cost of the ongoing crisis.
Water levels of the Dikhow River in Sivasagar and the Dhansiri (South) River in Numaligarh, Golaghat district, continue to flow above the danger mark, posing an ongoing threat to adjacent communities. The districts currently most affected include Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Bajali, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, and Jorhat.
In response to the persistent crisis, the state government is actively conducting extensive relief and rescue operations throughout the affected regions. Currently, 44 relief camps are providing shelter to approximately 15,000 displaced individuals. Additionally, numerous relief distribution centres are working to supply essential items such as food and drinking water to families impacted by the floods, striving to mitigate the hardship faced by the affected population.
