  • Severe and rapid erosion along the Brahmaputra River has sparked widespread panic among residents of Tezpur's historically significant Tal Kalibari area, threatening homes and heritage

TEZPUR: Even as several Upper Assam districts grapple with the aftermath of recent floods and ongoing rehabilitation efforts, fresh concerns have emerged in Sonitpur district following severe erosion by the Brahmaputra River that has put Tezpur's historic Tal Kalibari locality on high .

Rapidly rising water levels on Saturday led to significant washing away of the riverbank, alarming residents as powerful currents continued to eat into the land. According to local reports, the river began swelling noticeably on Saturday afternoon, with the situation deteriorating sharply by evening. This intensified flow has caused extensive erosion, submerging several trees and patches of vegetation, and creating a palpable sense of fear among those living close to the river’s edge.

Many long-time residents, who have witnessed numerous floods and erosion events over the years, described the current episode as unprecedented. "Floods and erosion are not new to us, but this time the situation is truly frightening and unlike anything we have experienced before," a local resident stated, reflecting the community's heightened anxiety.

The threat to Tal Kalibari is particularly concerning due to its historical significance in Tezpur. Local administration, including the Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur and the local MLA, are reportedly monitoring the situation closely as the community hopes for immediate intervention to protect the vulnerable riverfront and its residents from further devastation.
