Digital Desk: The flood situation in Assam has escalated to a critical level, claiming 34 lives, including two children tragically drowned in the Dhemaji district on Sunday, according to data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

As of the latest reports, over 2.62 lakh people across 12 districts in the state have been severely affected by the second wave of flooding. The districts hit hardest include Kamrup, Karimganj, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, and Jorhat.

The numbers are staggering, with Dhemaji district reporting the highest impact, affecting 69,252 people, followed by Cachar with 61,895, and Tinsukia with 45,281 people affected.

Incessant rainfall has led to rivers such as Brahmaputra, Dikhou, Jia-Bharali, Beki, and Kushiyara swelling above danger levels, triggering widespread inundation. The Brahmaputra River alone is reported to be flowing dangerously high in Dibrugarh and Neamatighat, while other rivers like Dikhou in Sivasagar and Jia-Bharali in Nt Road Crossing are also causing concern.

The floodwaters have submerged 6,546.44 hectares of crop area and 671 villages across 36 revenue circles. Additionally, approximately 23,000 people have sought shelter in 52 relief camps set up across the worst-hit districts. Livelihoods have been severely impacted, with 1,49,009 animals also affected by the deluge.

Authorities and relief workers continue to work tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected, but the situation remains dire as the floodwaters show no signs of receding, posing ongoing challenges for the affected population.
