Assam medical colleges to have quota system for Bhutan students.
Guwahati: Assam government decided to reserve two seats for Bhutan students in the state medical colleges. The reservation of the seats will come into force from this academic year.
The reservation of seats for Bhutan students in a way will foster ties between the two nations. India's Ambassador, Ruchira Kamboj, to Bhutan stated the same through Twitter.
Kamboj tweeted, "The Assam Government has allocated two MBBS seats for Bhutan from this academic year. This decision is to foster the vibrant people-to-people ties between our two countries #MesmerisingAssam #Bhutan."
The request for seats for the students of Bhutan was put before the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by the Consul General of Bhutan in Guwahati Phub Tshering months earlier.
Tshering met the CM for the same, and Sarma had asked Tshering to place the request in a written form. Later, Tshering also wrote to the CM with the request for reservation, which Sarma then continued, an official stated.
The Assam government chose to allocate two seats to Bhutan students a fortnight ago. A decision will further be taken concerning a full scholarship for the students subjected to required support by the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs, Government of India.

As per the Assam government's plan, both the seats are to be reserved from the All India Quota (AIQ) seats in the medical colleges in the state.
After the meeting, Sarma also tweeted, "Delighted to meet Mr. Phub Tshering, Consul General of Bhutan, in Guwahati. We also stand committed to upholding the bonhomie between Assam and Bhutan."
Sarma added that they have talked on several issues of mutual interest. Further, these interests will carry forward the long-cherished bilateral relationship between the two sides.
