Guwahati: Assam and Meghalaya government officials to hold a meeting today over the interminable border dispute between the two states at Silchar, Assam.
Recently, in an aim to find an amicable solution to long-pending border issues, Minister Atul Bora, along with his Meghalaya counterpart Minister Renikton Lyngdon Tongkhar, sat in a discussion at a CM level meeting on October 4.
“The aim of the meeting is to see the ground reality. No decision will be taken based on the meeting; the committee will submit their feedback to the respective chief ministers.” stated Tongkhar after the meeting.
Moreover, to discuss the border issues, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his counterpart Meghalaya chief minister Congrad K Sangma met on July 23 and August 6.
Assam and Meghalaya have border disputes over 12 areas, including Tarabari, Gijang, Phalia, Baklapara and Pilingkata.
As per the official report, in the first phase of discussion both the government will concentrate on the areas including- Phalia, Gijang and Tarabari.
Assam government claimed that this area falls under the territory of Cachar, Kamrup rural and Kamrup metro. However, the Meghalaya government contended that this falls under their domain at West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and East Jaintia hills.
