Digital Desk: Assam police have detained a man for allegedly raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl. He allegedly dropped her body into a river near the Sonapur region of Guwahati, Assam. 

According to the national news agency report, the victim had gone to a neighbouring shop to recharge her phone on June 26 and had been missing since then.

On June 30, the body of a Class 8 student was discovered in the Digaru River near Sonapur.

According to a report, the announcement sparked protests by people at the Sonapur police station. They demanded immediate action and the execution of the perpetrator.

The suspect has been identified as Bablu Tumung, an autorickshaw driver who allegedly surrendered to Assam police.
