Guwahati: Today marks the first death anniversary of Assam's former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi has remained one of the most prominent statesmen of the state.

Last year on this day, the great politician Gogoi passed away at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at 86.

Gogoi is known for being Assam's longest-serving Chief Minister. The veteran Congress leader passed away due to post-COVID complications.

On April 1, 1936, he was born into an Assamese Tai-Ahom family at Rangajan Tea Estate in the Sivasagar district.

The former leader started his political career as the student association leader at Gauhati University. The AICC in 1976 elected him as a joint secretary under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Since then, Gogoi has also served six terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha.

So, several political leaders and well-known personalities have offered their humble tribute to the Padma Bhusan awardee Tarun Gogoi on this day.

National President NSUI shared a tweet displaying his tribute to the former leader. The tweet read, "When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him. He lies on the paths of men. " Remembering Former Chief Minister of Assam Late Shri @tarun_gogoi ji On his Death anniversary."

Congress party Twitter handle posted, "Today we honour Congress stalwart and former Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi. The nation is grateful for his unparalleled work and dedication to the people and progress of both Assam & India."
