The blockade has sparked concerns among tourists and transporters, raising questions about inter-state travel rights

Digital Desk: On the morning of Tuesday, September 16, members of the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) intercepted several tourist vehicles from Assam at Umtyngngar, enforcing a self-imposed ban on their entry.

The association has barred Assam based tourist taxis taking visitors to most of the tourist sites in Meghalaya with the cite of local interests. This step is after AKMTTA had formally declared its intention to block tourists vehicles in the state of Assam.

Despite the presence of police personnel at the checkpoint, they did not intervene as AKMTTA members conducted checks and turned back the vehicles.

The blockade raised concerns among the tourists and transporters as the issue of interstate travel rights and the position of the law enforcers in such standoffs have been raised.

No official statement has been released yet by the Meghalaya government or the police regarding the legality of the action.
