Digital Desk: In a dramatic political twist, Meghalaya’s government witnessed a massive mid-term overhaul as eight ministers from Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s cabinet resigned, triggering widespread speculation across the state. The outgoing ministers hailed from four key parties: the National People’s Party (NPP), United Democratic Party (UDP), Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

This upheaval that saw two of the 12 member cabinet of the 60 member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is a very big change in the political environment of the state. The resignations, according to the sources, lacked any consultations or prior notice. This was allegedly found out when Ministers received sealed letters this week. Even the politeness of the letters did not leave the impression of doubt: With the dynamics of the political scenario in our state, I will have to give opportunity for others also to work and serve as Cabinet Ministers.”

The reshuffle of the cabinet actually took place on Tuesday when it was sworn in at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Shillong, at 5:00 PM. Eight new inducted ministers took the oath of office and secrecy under the administration of Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar.

The new ministers include Timothy D. Shira, Brening A. Sangma, Sosthenes Sohtun, and Wailadmiki Shylla (all from the NPP); Lahkmen Rymbui and Metbah Lyngdoh (UDP); Shanbor Shullai (BJP); and Methodius Dkhar (HSPDP).

Those making way include prominent names such as Ampareen Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon, Rakkam A. Sangma, Abu Taher Mondal, Paul Lyngdoh, Kyrmen Shylla, Shakliar Warjri, and AL Hek.

As the MDA government reaches the halfway mark of its second term, this unexpected reshuffle gives the cabinet a fresh look and new political dynamics to navigate.
