On Tuesday, the Kaziranga authorities prepared a plan after having discussions with the Golaghat, Nagaon, and Karbi Anglong district administration, the Disaster Management Department, and local organizations adjacent to the national park.
Digital Desk: There is a high possibility that early floods can create challenges in World Heritage site, Kaziranga at any moment. Due to continuous rainfall, the water level of the rivers and tributaries are rising, creating this possibility, according to Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.
On Tuesday, the Kaziranga authorities prepared a plan after having discussions with the Golaghat, Nagaon, and Karbi Anglong district administration, the Disaster Management Department, and local organizations adjacent to the national park.
According to Director Sonali Ghosh, 250 country boats have been kept ready, including one for each of the 233 forest camps. Additionally, several speedboats and 20 rubber boats have been prepared for forest staff to perform their duties during floods.
The Director also stated that no inconvenience has been created for wildlife so far. However, the roads in the Burha Pahar forest area have been already damaged, and some roads in Kohora, Bagori and Agaratoli forest areas have been unusual. Therefore, the National Park authorities have established a robust communication system for any situation that may arise.
Also, a special meeting was held in Kaziranga regarding the expansion of the National Park and issues faced by the residents.
Assam ministers Keshav Mahanta, Atul Bora, and Dr. Ranoj Pegu attended the meeting with senior forest department officials at Kohora in Kaziranga.
The meeting was also attended by Environment and Forest Department Special Chief Secretary M.K. Yadav, Dr. Sonali Ghosh, Additional District Commissioner, Regional Forest Officer, Revenue Circle Officer, and senior officials from districts and sub-district administrations.
The meeting also discussed issues like the withdrawal of the Eco-Sensitive Zone, measures to be taken to deal with the upcoming flood situation, demarcation of Kaziranga’s boundaries, etc.
