Digital Desk: Former India national team player Ajit Agarkar has been appointed as the chairman of the senior men's selection panel.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah made the announcement on July 4.

"The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprised of Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape, interviewed applicants for the position of one selector on the Men's Selection Committee. The three-member CAC had unanimously recommended Mr. Ajit Agarkar for the aforementioned job," Jay Shah said in a media release.

PTI reported earlier that the BCCI sought to get done with the formalities of the appointment as Agarkar will chair the selection committee meeting for the T20I team, which will play five games in the West Indies.

"Agarkar is the only candidate who appeared for the interview. It was a virtual one because he is now abroad on a family vacation," a BCCI source told PTI.

According to reports, there were no notable names from the North Zone. That is why the BCCI deviated from its long-held policy of assigning one selection from each of the five zones.

With Agarkar's appointment, the West Zone will now have two selectors, the other being Salil Ankola. The others are Subroto Banerjee from the Central Zone, S Sharath from the South, and SS Das from the East.

Agarkar has played 191 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), 26 Tests, and 4 T20Is. He was a part of the 1999, 2003, and 2007 ODI World Cup teams, as well as the 2007 World T20-winning Indian team.

He had a Test century at Lord's and was instrumental in India's Test triumph in Australia in 2004, with a six-wicket haul in the Adelaide game.

Agarkar is expected to be paid more than the present salary of Rs 1 crore earmarked for the chairman of the selectors. The remaining committee members each receive Rs 90 lakh.
