  • Thousands gathered in Biswanath Chariali on Friday, backing the state government's move to reduce the Kaziranga Eco-Sensitive Zone and opposing MP Gaurav Gogoi's contrary demands

On Friday, Biswanath Ghat witnessed a significant gathering as thousands of local residents, primarily from the fishing community, converged to voice their strong support for the Assam government's proposed reduction of the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park. The demonstration also saw fierce criticism directed at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who has publicly opposed the state's initiative.

Organised predominantly by local fisherfolk, the protesters highlighted the severe impact a wider ESZ would have on their traditional fishing rights and overall livelihoods along the Brahmaputra River. Participants underscored that communities in Upper Assam have already grappled with considerable challenges and restrictions stemming from previous expansions of the national park, directly affecting their ability to sustain themselves.

The assembled crowd expressed their clear approval of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's efforts to scale back the ESZ, viewing it as a crucial step towards alleviating the economic strain on riverine populations. They vehemently criticised MP Gogoi, alleging that his opposition to the reduction or his call for maintaining/increasing ESZ limits showed a disregard for the practical difficulties faced by local residents and those dependent on the Brahmaputra for their sustenance.

Carrying an array of placards and chanting slogans, the protesters marched through Biswanath Ghat, with much of their dissent aimed squarely at the Congress party. The unified message from the community underscored their desire for policies that balance conservation efforts with the socio-economic realities of traditional inhabitants.
