Inter-state travel between Assam and Meghalaya was severely disrupted on Friday, August 21, as widespread tensions along the border led to a complete suspension of cab services, leaving hundreds of commuters and tourists stranded across the region.
The Meghalaya Cab Association initiated a complete shutdown of its services for the day, specifically halting the operation of all Meghalaya-registered tourist vehicles. This move, coupled with similar restrictions impacting Assam-registered cabs, effectively severed a crucial transport link connecting the two neighbouring states.
The abrupt halt has significantly impacted the daily communication network, which relies heavily on these services for the movement of people and goods across the states. Many individuals travelling for work, essential services, or leisure found themselves without transport options, facing unexpected delays and logistical challenges.
Local residents and frequent travellers expressed deep concern over the situation. "The cab service is the backbone of connectivity here, and its disruption creates immense hardship for everyone," commented a Guwahati resident, highlighting the vital role these transport links play in daily life for communities on both sides of the border.
The current travel restrictions are a direct consequence of escalating tensions in the region, which have seen increased security measures and reports of public unrest in recent days. With no immediate resolution in sight, the uncertainty surrounding inter-state travel continues to mount, posing significant challenges for those dependent on this vital route between Assam and Meghalaya.
