Digital Desk: Guwahati was shaken last night after the tragic death of 26-year-old Bulbuli Saikia, a young woman hailing from Majuli. Her body was found hanging at her rented house in South Sarania and , raising serious allegations of domestic violence and dowry harassment against her husband and his family.


Bulbuli had moved to Guwahati in 2018 and was employed at a private security agency. In the middle of 2024, she met Shiva Kalita, a resident of Jalukbari, and soon the two Of them fell in love . Their court marriage was solemnized in November the same year. After getting married, Bulbuli shifted to her in laws place in  Jaymati Nagar, Jalukbari. However, her marital life was reportedly marred by disputes..


It has also been claimed that dowry demands had been put forth repeatedly causing a tension to build up. The family has alleged that dowry demands were made repeatedly, leading to growing tension. The alleged harassment did not stop even after she had moved out to a rented accommodation in South Sarania in an effort to get away with the mistreatment. Her relatives claim that the persistent abuse ultimately pushed her to take the extreme step.

Police from Paltan Bazar have detained her husband, Shiva Kalita, for interrogation.


Investigators suspect domestic discord and dowry-related demands as the primary reasons behind the suicide. A case has already been registered, and additional investigation is held.

Bulbuli’s untimely death has sparked outrage among her family and friends , who are demanding strict legal action against all those responsible. The incident has once again brought to the fore the grim reality of dowry harassment, highlighting the urgent need for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women from such abuse.
