The arrest was made as part of the CBI’s ongoing Operation Chakra-V, a nationwide crackdown targeting cybercriminals
Digital Desk: Today, in a major breakthrough against cybercrime, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a most-wanted criminal- Ubaid Ullah from Guwahati for his alleged involvement in an illegal SIM card network linked to multiple cyber offences.
The arrest was made as part of the CBI’s ongoing Operation Chakra-V, a nationwide crackdown targeting cybercriminals and their support systems. The accused had been absconding since August 2025.
According to officials, several Point of Sale (POS) agents were illegally issuing SIM cards, which were then used by cybercriminals to carry out offences such as fake digital arrests, loan frauds, and investment scams. The arrested individual in Guwahati is suspected to have acted as an aggregator, facilitating the distribution of these SIM cards.
During the investigation, the CBI conducted searches at nearly 45 locations across eight states and arrested a total of 10 accused persons.
Preliminary findings reveal that the accused transferred approximately Rs 67 lakh through multiple bank accounts to POS agents to procure around 10,000 illegally issued SIM cards.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue efforts to dismantle the larger network involved in enabling cybercrime activities across the country.
