Digital Desk: The Central Government has granted  Z- category security cover to the chief minister of Delhi Rekha Gupta, after the attack on the chief minister on Tuesday, 20th August , during one of the public grievance hearing events, named Jan Sunvai. The move decided and affirmed by reliable sources on Thursday , aims to enhance the security to the Chief Minister as there have been increased concerns over her security.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has taken over Gupta’s security from the Delhi Police. CRPF personnel reached her official residence on Thursday morning and assumed full charge. Additional guards have also been provided around her house and office  to ensure 24x7 security.

The incident occurred while CM Gupta was interacting with citizens during the public event. The accused in this case Rajesh Khimji, a resident of Rajkot, allegedly came to her, attempted  to  assault her and prompting a swift response from security agencies. He has been booked under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempted murder, carrying a punishment of up to 10 years in prison and a fine.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell are jointly interrogating the accused. According to police sources, Khimji had traveled to Delhi by train on Tuesday and stayed at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines. His mother subsequently argued that he was angry about videos of dogs being picked up off the streets of Delhi and he acted emotionally.

Known for holding regular ‘Jan Sunvai’, Rekha Gupta, who became Delhi CM in February 2025, was very actively involved in meeting people as part of her public out reach. The move to assign her Z-category security- one of the highest protection it offers- highlights growing threats to political leaders in volatile public space.
