Digital Desk: Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced the renovation and development of the Maidam complex of Lachit Barphukan.
The Assam CM stated on the occasion that the development project was launched at the start of the year-long celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Ahom general towards the end of last year. Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the bhumipujan for this upcoming project today after following the prescribed procedure.
The goal of this project is to carry out the recommendations of the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Preservation Committee in order to protect the Ahom General's burial. The first and most important step in this project is to protect the maidam, which will thereafter be developed into a wonderful state heritage attraction. The centerpiece of this project will be a statue of Lachit Barphukan that stands 125 feet tall and displays his impressive military strength.
In addition to the maidam itself, the project intends to build a historical museum to showcase the entire history and lore of Lachit Barphukan. The museum's goals also include the preservation of Ahom dynasty artifacts and displaying them to visitors from around the world.
This project will be developed as a tourism destination for all researchers and enthusiasts, which covers an area of 49 bighas of land in the Gohaingoan region of Holongapar in the Jorhat district. Steps will be taken to build a water body, improve the surrounding area, and increase the routes leading to the destination.
Moreover, a small residential quarter for 20–25 guests will also be built to aid researchers. Along with the museum project, a modern auditorium with a seating capacity of 500 people will be built. This will be used in the area for cultural and social purposes.
Himanta Biswa Sarma further stated that this project will be completed by April 2025, resulting in an influx of tourists to the region.
