Navjot Singh Sidhu has been appointed as an assistant to do clerical work in the Patiala Central Prison.
Digital Desk: The former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was convicted in a 1988 road rage case, will reportedly be a clerk at the Patiala Central Jail.
Moreover, Sidhu will be trained for three months and taught how to brief lengthy court judgments and compile jail records.
According to reports, Sidhu will not be paid for the first 90 days following the jail manual. He will be eligible for wages ranging from Rs 40 to Rs 90 per day once his training is completed. His abilities will determine his pay, and his earnings will be sent into his bank account.
Reports claimed that as Navjot Sidhu is a high-profile prisoner, he will work from the barracks. As he will not be able to leave his cell, the jail files will be sent to him in the barracks.
Sidhu began working as a clerk on Tuesday, according to jail officials. He'll work two shifts: 9 in the morning to noon and 3 pm to 5 pm.
Meanwhile, security has been strengthened within the barracks where Sidhu is being held. Sidhu has also been instructed to be watched by five wardens and four convicts.
In a 1988 road rage case, the cricketer-turned-politician was sentenced to one year in prison by the Supreme Court on May 19. On May 20, he surrendered to the Patiala trial court.
Notably, Navjot Singh Sidhu, diagnosed with obesity and metabolic disease, was given a diet plan by a medical board. The diet chart has not yet arrived at the jail.
Sidhu has survived on a salad and fruit diet for the past few months. He claimed he was allergic to wheat and refused to eat dal roti.
