The Congress on October 31 paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary. Former party chief Rahul Gandhi acclaimed her as a prominent example of women's leadership.

Rahul Gandhi paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi on her memorial "Shakti Sthal" on her death anniversary. 

"My grandmother served the nation fearlessly till the last moment — her life is a source of inspiration for us. A great example of women power, humble tributes to Mrs Indira Gandhi on her martyrdom day," Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

In a tweet from its official Twitter handle, Congress also praised the former Prime Minister's contribution to the nation. 

The tweet read, "She represented strength. She epitomized sacrifice, and she personified service. A billion salutes to the Iron Lady of India, our very first woman Prime Minister, a true Bharat Ratna, Smt. Indira Gandhi, on her death anniversary."

National President of the Indian Youth Congress Srinivas BV also tweeted," 'Even if I died in the service of the nation, I would be proud of it. Every drop of my blood will contribute to the growth of this nation and make it strong and dynamic.' Remembering the brave and indomitable spirit of Indira Gandhi ji."

Former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by two of her security guards. October 31st marks the 37th death anniversary of Indira Gandhi. Also, she is India's second-longest-serving Prime Minister and the only woman to date to have held the position.
