The ancient city of Xi'an endured a month-long lockdown in the later part of last year.
Digital Desk: To avoid an outbreak of coronavirus cases caused by the highly transmissible Omicron subvariant, some parts of the historic Chinese city of Xi'an were closed down once again. Officials stated on that businesses, schools, and restaurants in Xi'an, which has a population of 13 million, will close for one week.
The ancient city of Xi'an endured a month-long lockdown in the later part of last year. Since Saturday, 18 cases have been reported in the city. According to an official statement, the infections are brought on by the rapidly increasing Omicron variant, which is already a dominant strain in the US and UK.
The city official, Zhang Xuedong, stated during a press conference that Xi'an will impose "seven-day interim control measures." " As much as possible, the steps would "enable society to settle down, restrict movement... and cut the chance of cross-infection," he said.
"We must race against both the virus and time. We must be vigilant against all potential threats and hidden dangers, and should take fast action to prevent an explosion in community spreading," Zhang added.
The latest restrictions will come into force from midnight on Wednesday. Public amusement establishments like pubs, internet cafés, and karaoke bars would close as announced by the local government.
The notice also stated that the eateries might still provide takeaway but would not be permitted to serve diners inside the restaurants. Schools will begin summer vacation early, while universities will close their campuses.
