Digital Desk: A cyclonic storm that formed over the east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea near Goa at 11.30 p.m. Tuesday is expected to move nearly northward and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, and then into a very severe cyclonic storm, the India meteorological department (IMD) said in its morning bulletin.

"Cyclonic storm "Biparjoy" over east central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea at 0230 IST of 07 June near lat 12.5°N and lon 66.0°E, about 900km WSW of Goa. Likely to move nearly northwards and intensify into SCS during next 06 hour," the meteorological department bulletin read.

Gale winds of 80-90 km/h to 100 km/h are forecast to blow across the east central Arabian Sea and adjacent parts of the west central and southeast Arabian Sea. It is expected to reach 105-115 km/h to 125 km/h across the same area by Wednesday evening, IMD said. Squally winds of 40-50 km/h to 60 km/h are expected in locations bordering the west central and south Arabian Seas, as well as along the north Kerala-Karnataka-Goa coasts.

The intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy, its creation in the Arabian Sea, and its subsequent path, according to the IMD, is expected to influence the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala.

This is the second cyclone to form in the North Indian Ocean in the last three weeks. Cyclone Mocha, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, swept into Bangladesh and Myanmar, wreaking havoc.

In 2021, Cyclone Yaas formed at the onset of the monsoon season.
