The announcement comes a day after top cop Hemant Lohia was allegedly murdered by his house aide.

Digital Desk: Mobile internet has been restricted in sections of Jammu, where a top police officer was assassinated last night, and the neighbouring Rajouri district, only days before Union Home Minister Amit Shah's rally.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has excused the ban until 7 p.m. today by citing potential "misuse by miscreants."

Amit Shah arrived in Jammu late last night, on the same day that Hemant Lohia, the UT's Director General of Police (DGP) in charge of prisons, was allegedly murdered by his home help. So yet, no terror-related links have been discovered by police.

However, two terrorist incidents have occurred in Jammu and Kashmir in the last week.

Mr Shah will address a rally in Rajouri district of the Jammu region today, ahead of a security review meeting in Srinagar tomorrow, where he is likely to announce Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation for the Pahari people in the union territory. His other protest is tomorrow in the north Kashmir town of Baramulla.

Other communities have protested the ST classification because they either want it or have it but resent that another community gets a share of the quota for education and jobs.

Representatives from the Gujjar and Bakerwal tribes met with Amit Shah this evening, whose ministry controls the government as the UT has been under the central rule since August 5, 2019.

The visit is also significant for the BJP because the UT may hold elections in the coming months, more than three years after the state was divided into two UTs — one of which is Ladakh — as Article 370, which granted it special status, was repealed.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of the People's Democratic Party accused the BJP of separating communities through reservation.
