New Delhi: As India battles a copious covid situation with daily covid cases hitting a new high and number of deaths ticking a time bomb, a 56 year old Delhi Police Assistant Sub-Inspector has come forward to help perform the last rites of Covid-19 patients in the national capital.

ASI Rakesh Kumar is currently stationed at the Lodhi Road crematorium and helped more than a thousand grieving families amid the COVID surge.

According to the news agency ANI, the cop stated “I have helped nearly 1100 people. I have taken both shots of vaccines and take all precautions. If we help others, God will help us. I have postponed my daughter's marriage to help people here.”

He added that he helps workers and priests in the crematorium ground and reaches there around 7 am and leaves the place around 7-8 pm, From lighting pyres to picking up COVID-19 patient's body, buying puja material, and coordinating with the ambulance driver, he does them all.

Kumar also helped many women and elderly people perform the last rites when an ambulance puts the bodies outside and the family members are clueless about the next step. He added that he had helped many children cremate their parents as well.

The Delhi cop had even postponed his daughter's wedding which was slated to take place on May 7 to serve COVID-19 patients
