New Delhi: Under Central Vista Project, the Prime Minister's new house will be completed by December 2022. It has obtained an environmental all-clear amid Covid 19 pandemic that has rested most activities.

At a conference held last month, the EAC recommended environmental clearance for the redevelopment of the Common Central Secretariat buildings and the prime minister's residence.

The Ministry of Environment has already granted clearance in this project, which is part of Rs-13,450 crore Central Vista Redevelopment Project.

The Centre has also set aside Rs 20,000 crore and a strict time frame for the construction of the same, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) informed. As proposed, at least 4,918 trees will be maintained within the project site.

"Modern and secure residential facilities for the Vice President and the Prime Minister will be equipped with all necessary spaces and infrastructure, including the Special Protection Group; Environmental: Landscape/greenbelt development, traffic decongestion, provision of STP, OWC, safety aspects including fire-fighting system, maximum use of treated wastewater, well-designed network of stormwater drains, rainwater harvesting system, etc.," the EAC noted.

However, this new timeline goes through severe criticism. Questions are being raised. Why such an initiative can’t be deferred? The country is battling through Covid 19 pandemic and seeking help from other nations.
