Digital Desk: Former Punjab Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal joined the BJP in Delhi in the presence of party national president JP Nadda.

Atwal resigned from the Akali Dal's primary membership on April 19.

Atwal, who was born on March 15, 1937, served as the 14th Lok Sabha's deputy speaker from 2004 until 2009.

He was a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) member who represented Punjab's Phillaur constituency in the 14th Lok Sabha. He also served twice as Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.

On Sunday, Atwal's son, Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal, joined the BJP in New Delhi, along with several others from Punjab.

They were formally inducted into the BJP on Sunday at the party's national headquarters in the capital in the presence of senior BJP leaders.
