Weavers from India’s Northeast region have garnered significant national recognition, with artisans from Assam, Manipur, and Sikkim featuring prominently in the list of National Handloom Award winners for 2025. The awards, announced by the Centre, underscore the rich textile heritage and exceptional craftsmanship prevalent across the region.
Leading the regional achievements, Runima Chetia Choudhury of Assam has been selected for the esteemed Sant Kabir Handloom Award 2025 in the women’s weaving category. Choudhury received the top honour for her exquisite Muga Silk Saree, bringing national spotlight to Assam’s iconic golden silk tradition, a craft deeply embedded in the state’s cultural identity.
Assam further solidified its presence by securing two additional National Handloom Awards for 2025. Among these recipients is Jyoti Bhuyan, who was recognised in the women's category, further highlighting the state's diverse talent pool in handloom weaving.
Manipur also saw its weaving prowess acknowledged, with Takhellambam Rani Devi receiving a National Handloom Award. Her recognition adds to the growing national appreciation for the intricate and vibrant handloom products originating from the state.
The strong performance by these Northeastern states at a premier national platform serves as a testament to the dedication of local artisans and the enduring appeal of traditional handloom techniques.
