Digital Desk: In an unprecedented turn, the Gauhati High Court announced today that anyone who has been properly designated an 'illegal' will no longer have any political or land rights.

The Gauhati High Court recently declared firmly that anyone who qualifies as an illegal shall lose all political rights. This means that such individuals will be unable to vote in elections.

Notably, the illegal individual will also lose all rights to land and property. The court declared that any unauthorised individual in possession of land or property in the state would be taken by the government. Instead, such individuals will be awarded work permits to earn a living.

The court also stated that the government must give education and health care to those who have been declared illegals.

Furthermore, the High Court made it clear that any such person ruled illegal, if they are a beneficiary of any social scheme, will be barred from receiving its benefits.

According to the High Court, a total of 32,281 people have been proclaimed illegals or foreigners in Assam thus far. However, 97,714 instances are still outstanding in this regard.
