Digital Desk: On Monday, during the opening day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh took the oath required to serve as a representative from Punjab in the Rajya Sabha. The former cricketer-turned-politician, 42, took the oath to serve in the Rajya Sabha along with roughly 25 other leaders.

Misa Bharti, the daughter of former Bihar state minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rajeev Shukla, vice president of the BCCI, A Rao Meena, Vijay Sai Reddy, Kheeru Mahto, Shambhala Saran Patel, Ranjeet Ranjan, Maharashtra Majhi, Aditya Prasad, Praful Patel, Imran Pratapgarhi, Sanjay Raut, Sas

 

Others who took the oath included Randeep Singh Surjewal, P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, R Girl Rajan, S Kalyan Sundaram, KRN Rajesh Kumar, Javed Ali Khan, and V Vijendra Prasad.

 

Due to various circumstances, renowned former athlete PT Usha (from Kerala) and iconic music composer Ilaiyaraaja (from Tamil Nadu) were unable to attend the Rajya Sabha to take the oath.

 

 

On the opening day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, newly elected representatives from various political parties took their oaths.

 

Later, references to obituaries for a number of dignitaries who just passed away were read.

 

Shinzo Abe, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Mwai Kibaki, three former presidents of the United Arab Emirates, were also honoured by the Rajya Sabha.

 

Funeral expenses were also paid for previous members Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Kishore Kumar Mohanty, Robert Kharshiing, and K. K. Veerappan.

 

Later, PC Mody, the secretary general of the Rajya Sabha, also placed a statement (in English and Hindi) on the table listing the bills that had received the President's assent and been passed by the Houses of Parliament during the 256th session of the Rajya Sabha
