Digital Desk: Hari Chand, Asian Games double gold medallist and Olympian, Hari Chand passed away on Monday morning at 69. The former long-distance runner was born in Ghorewah village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, on April 1, 1953. Chand was one of India's most accomplished long-distance runners.

Hari Chand was a legendary distance runner in India. He represented his country in two Olympic Games. He finished eighth in the 10,000m at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, with a time of 28:48.72, a national record that held for 32 years until Surendra Singh broke it.Chand then participated in the 1980 Olympic Men's Marathon, where the Indian completed the race with a time of 2:22:08 at Lenin Stadium, Moskva.

Hari Chand was also given the Arjuna Award for his contributions to Indian sports.
"This is a huge blow to Indian sports." He was my superior in the CRPF. He was both competitive and uncomplicated. He was known for grooming players everywhere he went. He taught me a great deal. "To many of us, he was like a guiding light," said Khajan Singh, an Asian Games medalist swimmer.
