The HNYF delegation met with B. Ranee, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, to raise public grievances over the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles
Digital Desk: In Nongpoh The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Northern Region, has issued a strong warning against the movement of heavy trucks along the Umrit–Umdu stretch of the 20 Mer Road in Ri-Bhoi district, citing severe road damage and increasing risks to public safety.
The road connecting Umdu village to Umrit has been very much degraded through frequent landslides and soil erosion. Of particular concern is the narrow bridge along the route, which has turned out to be a hazardous choke point to the daily commuters.
The group, headed by Afred Malai, General Secretary of HNYF Northern Region, Vincent Sylliang, Secretary of HNYF 20 Mer Circle and George Tangsang, Adviser of Pahammawlein 20 Circle, has encouraged truck operators and drivers to avoid using the route to carry heavy goods.
They warned that the further transport of overloaded trucks does not only deteriorate the state of the road, but also threatens the lives of local residents.The HNYF delegation also held a meeting with B. Ranee, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi to present the public grievance about the uncontrolled heavy traffic. In reaction, the ADC promised that the district administration would treat the issue with seriousness.
The HNYF has also urged the authorities to restrict the movement of over loaded trucks immediately, enact prohibitory practices and to take all the required measures that would stop the deterioration of the road.
The organization emphasized that urgent intervention is needed to ensure the safety of daily commuters and prevent potential accidents along this vulnerable route.
