Notably, the Immersion has further asked for a court order prohibiting Meta from using the infringing technology and unspecified damages.

Digital Desk: Immersion Corp. claimed in a lawsuit that Meta Platforms Inc. built its industry-leading virtual reality headset by infringing on its patents.

Immersion said in a case filed on Thursday in federal court in Waco, Texas, that the Meta Quest 2, which dominates the market, infringes on six patents relating to haptic technology. Haptics is vibrations that simulate real-life forces in video game systems and controls, such as blocking a blow in a virtual boxing game.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has committed to invest $10 billion each year to bring to life his vision of a virtual reality-enabled metaverse. Meta Quest 2 hit 8.7 million sales in 2021, more than twice as many as the previous year, and the firm owns 80% of the game.

Notably, the Immersion has further asked for a court order prohibiting Meta from using the infringing technology and unspecified damages.

Outside of regular business hours, Meta officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Immersion, which specialises in haptics patents, has a reputation for taking on some of the world's most powerful corporations in licensing disputes.
