India gets re-elected in UN Human Rights Council for 6th term

New Delhi: India got re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 6th term. The period includes the year between 2022-2024. 

They vowed to work for the promotion and protection of Human Rights. Through "Samman, Samvad and Sahyog," will promote and safeguard the rights.

India's Permanent Mission to the UN tweeted, "India gets re-elected to the @UN_HRC (2022-24) for a 6th term with an overwhelming majority. Heartfelt gratitude to the @UN membership for reposing its faith in India (sic)."

"We will continue to strive for improvement and security of Human Rights through #Samman #Samvad #Sahyog #Samman #Samvad #Sahyog," it appended. 

The UN General Assembly elected by confidential ballot Argentina, Benin, Cameroon, Eritrea, Finland, Gambia. Also, elected Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Montenegro, Paraguay, Qatar, Somalia, UAE and the USA.

The committee is formed up of 47 member states. Moreover, the group has been criticized for allowing authoritarian powers to take share.

Human Rights Council applicants are selected in geographic organizations to secure even representation. So, there were no competing events on Thursday to choose 13 new members and to re-elect five members. Further, members cannot serve more than two back-to-back sessions.
