Digital Desk: In the wake of the prolonged ethnic violence that has affected Manipur since May 3, members of Parliament (MPs) from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.LA) visited the state to look into the situation. The delegation interacted with the victims and locals who had been impacted by the violence while visiting relief camps in Churachandpur, Moirang, and Imphal after arriving there on July 29.
The MPs were deeply shocked and moved by the distressing reports of concerns, doubts, and grief from people affected by the unprecedented conflicts between the two communities. The situation has led to anger and a sense of alienation among all groups, necessitating urgent attention and resolution.
According to reports, over 140 people have reportedly died, more than 500 have been injured, and more than 5,000 homes have burned as a result of the federal and state government's failure to protect citizens' lives and property. More than 60,000 individuals have been internally displaced as a result of the violence, leaving thousands homeless and vulnerable.
The delegation highlighted that over the past three months, the state machinery has entirely failed to keep things under control, with constant firing and arson adding to the chaos. Especially when it comes to the well-being of children, who need immediate attention and care, the conditions at the relief camps were pathetic. The uncertainty that students from other streams must contend with heightens the seriousness of the situation.
The MPs expressed concern over the internet ban that has been in place for the last three months, stating that it has fueled unsubstantiated rumors and added to the existing mistrust. They also criticized the Prime Minister's silence, viewing it as a lack of concern for the violence in Manipur.
The group sincerely sought the restoration of peace and harmony through the adoption of effective measures, with justice as the cornerstone, in a joint appeal to the governor of Manipur. They emphasized the necessity of quickly rehabbing and resettling the impacted people in order to restore stability to the region.
Moreover, the MPs urged the Governor to inform the Union Government of the complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur during the past 89 days and to intervene immediately to restore peace and normalcy in the state.
