Digital desk: China's comments regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh were rejected by India on Tuesday. The External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, issued a robust statement, stating that China's objection to the Prime Minister's travel to the northeastern state "does not stand to reason".
Speaking in response to China's criticism, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Chinese side has been informed of this "consistent position" on numerous occasions. Jaiswal said, "Objecting to such visits by Indian leaders to Arunachal Pradesh or India's developmental projects in the state does not stand to reason."
"We reject the comments made by the Chinese side regarding the visit of the Prime Minister to Arunachal Pradesh," he said.
On March 9, Prime Minister Modi traveled to Arunachal Pradesh to officially open the world's longest twin-lane tunnel, the strategically significant Sela Tunnel. China declared that it "never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally set up by India and firmly opposes it."
Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, made the announcement on Monday in response to a query regarding PM Modi's travel to Arunachal Pradesh.
The Chinese Foreign Minister said, "India’s relevant moves will only complicate the boundary question and disrupt the situation in the border areas between the two countries."
"The area of Zangnan is Chinese territory," Wang said. These statements made by Wang are consistent with China's historical claim of sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh, sometimes known as 'South Tibet.'
China has been criticizing India's stance, seeing such acts as provocations, even as India continues to claim its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh and reinforces it with infrastructure projects like the Sela Tunnel. China views the Sela Tunnel as an unwanted statement of Indian dominance. The Defence Ministry has stressed the tunnel's strategic importance in guaranteeing all-weather connectivity and enhancing defense preparedness.
