The CBI Director is appointed by a committee comprised of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for a two-year term.

Digital Desk: Praveen Sood, the head of police in Karnataka, has been appointed as the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He will take over for current director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose term will expire on May 25.

Mr. Sood made headlines in March when Karnataka Congress chairman DK Shivakumar accused him of shielding the state's BJP government. Mr. Shivakumar demanded the arrest of the state's Director General of Police, stating that he was filing criminal charges against Congress leaders.

The CBI Director is appointed by a committee comprised of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for a two-year term. The appointment can be extended for up to five years.
