One of the leading causes for the wide range of fuel prices across the country is transportation costs.

In the face of rising petrol and diesel prices, Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Friday that oil marketing corporations make their own retail price decisions. When pricing reviews began after the elections, the increase was only Rs 10 per litre, significantly less than other countries, he said, adding that the ministry is aware of inflation worries as well. The minister encouraged non-BJP-ruled states to lower the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum items to help consumers, pointing out that the Centre had already done so.

Brent crude fell $1.68, or 1.6 per cent, to $106.65 a barrel on Friday, putting it on track for a weekly loss of about 5%. According to Reuters, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell $1.72, or 1.7 per cent, to $102.07.
