Mumbai: The police imposed a curfew in the disorder-hit town of Amravati in Maharashtra on Saturday morning. The curfew was imposed after a furious mob of people went on a rampage vandalizing various stores and private properties.
A mob threw stones at stores throughout the Bandh (shut-down) allegedly organized by local BJP workers in protest against the rallies organized by minority organizations on Friday to condemn the recent violence in Tripura, police stated.
On Saturday morning, hundreds of people, many of them holding saffron flags in their hands and raising catchwords, came out on streets in Rajkamal Chowk area of the eastern Maharashtra city, located around 670 km from Mumbai.

After Saturday’s violence, Amravati’s in-charge, Police Commissioner Sandip Patil, imposed prohibitory orders in the town under CrPC Sec. 144 (1), (2), (3) to ensure against any unfortunate occurrences.
People are not be allowed to come out of their houses besides medical emergencies. Furthermore, a gathering of more than five people is not allowed, as per the order.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil appealed to the people through a video message following the violence. He has urged the people from all communities to maintain harmony and order.
“Please maintain calm… I appeal to all Hindus and Muslims brethren to maintain peace,” Walse-Patil stated in his address.
Further, Shiv Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut pushed the opposition BJP for allegedly fomenting disorder in Amravati and other areas.
