After meeting with the President, Congress chairman Mallikarjun Kharge says PM Modi should visit Manipur and take steps to restore peace...


Digital Desk: Opposition leaders met with President Droupadi Murmu here on Wednesday to request her assistance in the Manipur issue. On behalf of the opposition parties, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge sought approval from President Murmu.


The opposition parties are requesting that the President intervene in the matter, stating that violence in the BJP-ruled northeastern state is unabated.


After meeting President Murmu, Congress chairman Mallikarjun Kharge said PM Modi should visit Manipur and take steps to restore peace in the state.


Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury gave the President a signed memorandum. Sushmita Dev proposed sending two courageous women from two different communities in Manipur to the Rajya Sabha (selected by the President) as a small step towards redressing the irreparable hurt and violation done to Manipur's women.

Sharad Pawar, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan), Derek O'Brien, Sanjay Singh, Kanimozhi, Sanjay Raut, Ram Gopal Yadav, and others were also there at the discussion.


Some opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) MPs who visited Manipur on July 29-30 were part of the opposition group that met with the President.


While the ruling party wants a brief discussion on Manipur to which Union Home Minister Amit Shah will respond, the opposition is demanding a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a discussion under Rule 267 after suspending all other House activity.
